Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream Dupes: The Creams That Get You 90% There
Magic Cream's trick is a texture that makes skin look rested before makeup. Four creams from $13 copy most of it, one for every skin type.

The e.l.f. Holy Hydration! Face Cream, about $13, is the Magic Cream dupe to start with: the same hyaluronic acid and peptide idea in a cushiony cream that sits well under makeup. If your skin is dry or easily irritated, Paula's Choice Skin Recovery, about $42, is the closer formula and still costs less than half the original.

Charlotte Tilbury's Magic Cream started backstage, as the cream she used to make tired models' skin look plump and fresh before makeup. It's still one of the most duped moisturizers around, and at $105 for 50 ml, one of the most expensive creams people use every single day. Here's what you're actually paying for, and the four creams that get you most of it for a fraction of the price.
What You're Paying For
Magic Cream is a rich but fast-absorbing moisturizer built around hyaluronic acid, a peptide complex, vitamins C and E, and plant oils. The result people buy it for is visible in minutes: skin that looks plumper and dewier, and a smooth, slightly cushioned base that foundation glides over.
None of those ingredients is rare. Hyaluronic acid and peptides are now standard in drugstore moisturizers. What's harder to copy is the texture, rich enough to plump, light enough not to pill under makeup, and the jar, which is honestly half the pleasure. A good dupe matches the texture and the actives. It won't match the jar.
“Magic Cream's real trick isn't an ingredient. It's a texture that makes skin look rested in the five minutes before makeup, and that part is easy to copy.”
The Best Dupe for Most Skin: e.l.f. Holy Hydration!
The e.l.f. SKIN Holy Hydration! Face Cream is the one to start with. Around $13 and rated 4.6, it combines hyaluronic acid, peptides, niacinamide and squalane in a cushiony cream that sinks in quickly and leaves skin smooth rather than greasy. It works on normal, dry and combination skin, and it sits well under foundation, which is the test most dupes fail.
Where it falls short: it's a little less rich than the original. On very dry skin in winter, you may want a second thin layer, or the next pick.
The Closest Formula: Paula's Choice Skin Recovery
If you want the formula rather than just the feel, the Paula's Choice Skin Recovery Replenishing Moisturizer is the closest match on paper: hyaluronic acid, peptides, antioxidants and skin-replenishing emollients, fragrance-free and built for dry, sensitive skin. It's rated 4.4 and costs around $42, so it's not a budget swap, but it's still less than half the price of Magic Cream. It's richer than the original, which makes it a lovely night cream too.
The Makeup Artists' Cream: Embryolisse
Long before Magic Cream, French makeup artists had a cream in their kit for exactly the same job. The Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré, with shea butter, aloe vera and beeswax, has been a backstage staple for decades. It moisturizes, smooths texture, and doubles as a primer, so if the reason you want Magic Cream is how makeup looks on top, this is your dupe. Around $32 for 75 ml, rated 4.6. It's rich, so use a thin layer and give it a minute.
If Magic Cream Feels Too Heavy
Magic Cream is too rich for some oily and combination skin, and so is its dupe. The CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion is the light alternative: an oil-free lotion with ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, around $14 and rated 4.7. Despite the name, it works just as well in the morning under sunscreen. You won't get the dewy cushion, but you will get a calm, hydrated base that doesn't slide by lunchtime.
How to Get the Magic Cream Effect From Any of Them
Half of the backstage effect is technique. Warm a pea-sized amount between your fingertips, then press it into the skin instead of rubbing, starting at the center of the face and working out. Give it two or three minutes before foundation, and add a tiny extra touch on the tops of the cheekbones if you want the glow. In the morning, sunscreen always goes on top.
Magic Cream is still a beautiful product, and if the jar on your shelf makes you happy every morning, that's a fair reason to buy it. But for the result on your skin, a $13 cream gets you most of the way there.
